Burundi’s Muyinga Province is in a remote part of Burundi, at least a six-hour drive from the capital – and that’s if the rain hasn’t made the roads impassable. Currently producing only natural coffees, this washing station is now building a new wet mill for future fully washed coffees.
This coffee is called Hafi, which means “close” in Kirundi. Before the washing station opened, small farmers in the area faced a 20km journey to deliver their freshly harvested cherry to the nearest wet mill. With the hilly terrain, that was too far to travel in one day. Quality standards require same-day processing for harvested cherry. A wet mill nearby makes it possible to grow this specialty coffee, consisting of about 2,000 farmer workers who have much experience working at other wet mills and are an incredible asset for quality processing
We purchase this coffee from Burundi through the green exporter/importer JNP Coffee. Founded by Burundian-born Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian in 2012, JNP Coffee has built a successful business based on the quality potential of the coffees and the enterprising farmers who care for them, inspired by her deep ties to Burundi. They consider the coffee growers in Burundi as partners and they, too, must share in the success as they build their futures together.
